I think as the "stigma" of drug use fades from the consciousness of the public, the Grateful Dead will become the American Institution we know they really are. For now the cloud of drug use/abuse keeps quite a few folks from hitching thier cart to Jehovah's favorite choir. Closet Deadheads who secretly listen but are afraid to let people know they like a band that was "all about drugs" - I hate the mass media and their lowest common denominator pandering.

How long did it take for the likes of Bird and Coltrane to be known soley for their music and not for their drug issues? My old man was a jazz fan in the 50's but he thought of Coltrane as just a junky and wouldn't even give his music a chance, now if I play some 'Trane for him he digs it, and even gets over his old notions.

I remember him one time sticking his head into my room while I was listening to Dark Star from Live Dead and saying "wow, thats actually music, what is it?" I say Grateful Dead and he leaves in a huff.

I know a lot of younger folks who are digging the Dead, for folks in their 20's its cool again, seems like folks in their 30's hate the hippy thing so much and can't separate the Grateful Dead from the hippy wannabe element.

Not something to put on the old job resume...unless you're trying to get a job working with me.

Frank DeFord (NPR) did Jerry a nice one yrs ago in comparing his life/passion/excesses to those of Mickey Mantle - who passed around the same time. I'll try to sneak it into the show...
Jerry is like my 'gramps': I Love him; I miss him every single day. My wkly. show on the 7th. will be All Dead
